Two New Books

Oren Fire Apparatus Photo Archive
By Thomas L. Herman.
Oren Fire Apparatus manufacturing developed  as an offshoot of The Roanoke Welding and Equipment Company, a Roanoke, Virginia, based family business founded in 1917, which specialized in welding, fabrication, automotive repair and specialty truck body building. It was an easy complement to build some small-town light-duty pumpers. These were so well received that by the early 1940s fire engines became the company's principal products. Oren became a favorite of the fire service, and in advertisements proudly proclaimed itself "The South's Only Fire Truck Manufacturer." Carefully selected photos by noted historian Thomas L. Herman create a magnificent photographic history of Oren built rigs, from the early front mount pumpers to the more advanced body designs built on commercial chassis and the famous and awe inspiring "Custom" rigs. Also featured, in photos never before published, are the very first aerial ladder built by Oren and the very unusual "one of a kind" rigs. This volume will delight fire apparatus enthusiasts everywhere.

Ford Fire Trucks
By Kent Parrish
Although there have been many commercial chassis providers throughout history, there is arguably no more recognizable name in the American automotive industry than Ford. This book serves as a pictorial history of the role Ford chassis have played in the evolution of fire apparatus. Fire trucks of all types built on the famous Model T, the long standing F-Series, the venerable C-Series, the honorary Louisville-Line, and other miscellaneous Ford models have prolifically and efficiently served towns both large and small since the advent of motorization. This chronicle pays homage to the contributions this automotive legend has made to the fire service with a brilliant display of classic rigs and modern machines, with representatives from over 150 fire apparatus manufacturers - from the glamour queens themselves to smaller builders with characteristics just as neat as their big name peers.

Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellness, 3rd edition

The third edition of the IFSTA Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellness manual is intended to provide an overview of programs, policies, procedures, and actions that will establish and maintain a culture of safety within the fire and emergency services. The IFSTA Validation Committee for this manual wanted to provide information for three groups: fire and emergency service administrators, supervisors, and emergency responders. By providing this information, it is hoped that a new culture based on safety, health, and wellness concerns can be instilled in the current and future generations of emergency responders. The basis for this manual is NFPA® 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program. Additional standards are listed in the Introduction and in Appendix A. This manual is also a companion to the IFSTA Fire Department Safety Officer manual.

As apparent from the expanded title, the 3rd edition includes more than safety-related information. Following a discussion of the risks faced by fire and emergency services personnel the manual provides a review of the dominant culture that contributes to the current level of injuries and fatalities sustained by the service. Methods for creating a new safety-based culture grounded on changes in personal behavior and organizational change is recommended. The manual then lays out the requirements for health and fitness programs, as well as training, apparatus, tool and equipment, protective clothing, emergency scene, and facility safety. Finally, an outline for developing and implementing a safety, health, and wellness program is provided. The focus of the manual is on the actions personal culture which and responsibilities of the individual members, supervisors, managers, and department administrators. This manual provides guidance for creating a safe work environment, establishing an organizational and embraces emergency responder's safety, and providing fire and emergency responders with recommendations for a safe and healthy lifestyle.
